Should I get a surveyor?

Run the calculator first — it will show you what a lower RV would actually save once caps and reliefs are applied. Then work through this:

  • Is your venue a hotel, or another category without pub relief? A surveyor is more likely to be worth it.
  • Is your RV above roughly £51,000? The transitional cap and RHL multiplier interact differently above this point, and a real saving is more likely to reach your bill.
  • Did the calculator's "what if my RV were lower" panel show £0 saved even at a meaningfully lower RV? If so, a challenge is unlikely to be worth a paid surveyor's fee right now, however much the headline RV rise annoys you.
  • Do you have solid evidence — comparable rents, trading figures, or occupancy data depending on your venue type? See what evidence a challenge needs.

If it looks worth pursuing, see our guide to

choosing a rating surveyor.

We're a bar owner's information site, not a surveyor. If you send this form, we may pass your details to a RICS-regulated rating firm we work with, who will contact you. They would pay us if you instruct them. You can check your valuation yourself free on the Valuation Office's service. No one can guarantee a reduction.
